Koman Lake

Lake Komani is a narrow, twisting lake that goes across the north of the country, among its steepest mountains. The journey is fantastic. Gillian Gloyer, of Bradt guides, says it "deserves to be on the world's classic boat trips".

The lake goes across some of the most remote areas of Albania, from Koman, near Shkodra, to Breglumas, near Bajram Curri (you can check the map on the side to track it's path). For the roughly two hours of the trip, there are no cities or villages in sight, only solitary houses in the middle of vast mountains. It's an amazing sight of rocky, steep mountains and a narrow, twisting lake with clear water. It is a truly unusual sight to see people here make something out of the difficult terrain, supporting their livelihood far, far away from schools, hospitals and, well, other people. Throughout the trip, you can see lonely houses on top of the hills, or nearer to the lake, far from the previous and the next house. The ferry boat itself is nothing spectacular, but at 300 lek per person, the trip is inexpensive, and in a beautiful summer day, it's irreplaceable. From the east side, the boat leaves Komani at around 10am everyday in the summer. From the west side, it leaves the little village of Breglumas at 8am. If you're planning to bring a vehicle on the boat, you should be well ahead of schedule (2-3 hours at least), since it is small and it usually fills up to capacity.
