Berat
The ancient city of Berat is a cultural and historical treat. Situated on a steep hill and featuring a uniquely attractive architecture, Berat is easily recognizable in many photos of Albania by its white houses and many windows.
Berat has been inhabitated since at least 4000 years ago, and there are remnants of history and archaeology throughout the city. The walls of the castle surround the top of the hill, and within them there are many medieval churches as well as narrow city streets. The old city within the old castle walls offers beautiful walking opportunities, with sights of traditional houses and architecture as well as panoramas over the mountains and valleys nearby. In Berat you will also find historic mosques, most of which are located near one another not far off the city's modern centre. The city has three main neighborhoods: Mangalem and Kala (castle), and Gorica on the other side of the river. All three neighborhoods are designated as 'museum zones' (hence Albanians refer to Berat as a 'museum city') in order to protect the city from careless development. The Osumi river, which runs right by the city, is a popular spot for rafting trips. These trips are organized throughout the summer.
