Shkodra

Once a busy cultural and artistical centre, Shkodra is considered by many visitors as the soul of Albania. Its characteristically narrow streets and ancient houses stand beside Socialist-era buildings and newer developments. The nearby lake and the legendary castle of Rozafa are both very enjoyable sights.

A bit further lies the beach of Velipoja, on the Adriatic. Shkodra is also the gateway to the northeastern mountains of the country, as well as its hydroelectricity dams. There is a very enjoyable boat trip that begins near Shkodra and goes up to near Tropoja, in the northeast, by crossing the Koman lake.
